In reality, a homeowner can have more damage on their hands from a furnace going out than from a break-in. If a furnace fails unnoticed on a cold day or night, anything in the house that holds water-sinks, pipes, radiators, toilets, dishwashers-can freeze and burst, creating significant repair and replacement costs.
